Study Skills: Always Study Smarter Not Harder

Learning is a mechanic everybody needs to have. It is very difficult to study nowadays, for the majority of us are inside our room and alone facing this battle.

Unfortunately no matter how hard you study, if you're not practicing the right attitude and skills nothing will retain. In this sense, I recommend these practices, for students to study smarter and not harder.

1. Practice self-management

Always remember P.S.O. (Plan, Schedule, and Organize), whether is it a checklist, a calendar, or a simple note. Draw your P.S.O. you are the protagonist and antagonist of your own learning journey, practice self-management. As a learner who should be aware of what learning style works for you, how can you make most of your time, and reinvent the way you approach learning.

2. Study notes

Even though we are in the world of online classes, and everything is recorded. Writing down notes is still essential, you do not need to write everything. All you need is to ensure you have the right words, phrases, and sentences. to use for your review or study. Nothing beats old-fashion pen-and-paper note-taking or you can use a note-taking application. It is literary up to you, taking study notes makes you feel the urge to learn more and peak your interest in learning.

3. Rethink multitasking

If teachers are mortal, so as students. please dear students do not ever indulge in multitasking if you do not have any idea how it works. The most common mistake of multi-tasking is literary thinking that doing multiple things is good but not literary gaining result. It creates more problems if you are doing so many school tasks and nothing is completed. That is why multitasking is something you should do for activities or situations that are short and precise.

4. Focus on instruction, not distraction
(friends, create ambiance, materials, and tools)

Studying can be affected by environmental and resources interference. Knowing what type of learner you are will help you to know what to consider in terms of building your studying environment. Especially right now that we are all at home, it is hard to indulge in studying if everything around you can turn into a literary distraction. Understanding yourself, your surrounding, and your style can help you study smarter.

5. Reward yourself

After a long day of studying or completing tasks, it is important to celebrate. No matter how small or big the task is, once you completed it pat yourself in the back for a job well done. You need to create a positive mindset that you can do it no matter what and it is all worth celebrating.

6. Keep yourself healthy

Losing sleep, having eyebags, or worst getting sick while studying is not promoting good studying habits. Avoid as much as possible studying hard to the point that it costs your health. At some point, you need to stop, take a breather and recuperate. We are all human beings and have certain limits, do not extend to that limit and study base on our overall health.

7. Negotiate with teachers

Deadlines are the worst enemy of all students and teachers alike. One of the crucial moments of studying and completing tasks is that majority of them are all in a certain time frame, and as any student will tell they need more time. So at this point coordinating and negotiating with your teaches is important. Express honesty and courtesy regarding deadlines and clarity on how tasks can be completed in the inclusion of the deadline. In a world that we can voice out ourselves, it is crucial that you express your concern and resolution to things that can make our life work with ease.

8. Study with intention

If your mindset about studying is all about doing this for the sake of doing it, at this point I recommend stop and reevaluate your life. Education is a privilege, but not everyone has the luxury of having it. Revisit your intentions and think deeply about why you are studying in the first place. Teachers, parents, and guardians are all only guides, at the very end of the day, we cannot force you to do things you do not like. But just know that your intentions and actions have life consequences, your choices are your demise.

Studying is very important, as a teacher the greatest achievement I can share is that I am proud to see my students achieve their dreams. I can only do much for them, and I hope then view studying as a stepping tool to their overall aspirations.
