Teachers are creatures of many wonders and secrets. We are asked to portray a certain character when we are in teaching mode. Little do people know, teachers have certain details in their everyday work that we do and we do not like or even dare talk about.
Sometimes we do keep our silence for the sake of peace and harmony. But in reality, as teachers, we should be at least willing to admit details from our beloved profession that make it interesting in the first place.
Disclaimer: This post is for entertainment purposes only. I am sharing my experience as a teacher and I am not generalizing the overall teaching experience. It may vary between teachers. These are all my opinion about the matter. Please do not come for me.
As a teacher, here are something I am now willing to admit:
1. Hassles of parent meetings/conferences
Do not quote me or come from me, is it just me our meeting your students' parents and guardians are not a fun event. There are parents and guardians that I could say really know how to coordinate and talk to a teacher. But base on general experience majority of parents and guardians I met are actually not pleasant. Some of them talk to me as if I am their personal babysitter, some talk to me as if I am God and I could deliver their ridiculous request, or worst some are just judgemental they already judge my character by just looking at me. Again I am not generalizing the teaching community, some teachers are lucky to have parents and guardians that are supportive, it is just that not everybody has the same luck. So for those teachers here that have a disliking attitude towards meeting parents and guardians do not worry you are not alone.
2. Admiring students
Okay! Let me clarify when you teach in a class of high schoolers, senior high schoolers, and college students will you not be intrigued by how these students grow up looking more and more good-looking. As if they are born with the best genes in the world. So yeah! I admit I do admire and have a crush on my students. I will not be a hypocrite and tell you that I do not find any of them attractive. But one thing I can assure everybody here, I never indulge in my students. I always maintain a professional and strict approach with them. I just admire them from afar. Asking questions like:
- Why are they so good-looking?
- What happens to my high school days?
- Why do I look like this?
- Are their parents hot?
So yeah! It is more of a self-esteem situation on my end. I just want to let it out there, admiring your students is normal. Just do not cross the threshold. Again we are teachers let us be professionals.
3. Attending faculty/staff meeting
I will be speaking from the heart, and to be frank, not all faculty/staff meetings are meant to happen. In my general understanding faculty/staff meeting is all about a dialogue regarding the internal affairs of the school or checking on the morale and well-being of the teachers. Yes! that happens but not most of the time. Some faculty/staff meeting revolves around the supervisor talking for more than an hour non-stop on the topics that sometimes are tended to attack teachers or to add more things to do on existing works (Again I am speaking from experience). Sometimes there is a misunderstanding as to what significant purpose faculty/staff meeting entails. I am not generalizing anything, I have a good professional relationship with the school admin I worked with; it is just that some meetings I believe are misused and misguided.
4. Party Time! (Drinking Alcohol)
TGIF! Party all night long! Teachers are drinkers, again not everybody, but the majority of us love alcohol. To be honest, my typical Friday night is with my co-teachers having a drinking session and we just talk for hours about our week. Sometimes if I have time or enough money going to bars, and meeting old friends is my go-to. I am not stating that teachers have alcohol problems or we are abuse alcohol to forget. I am just stating that teachers do have PERSONAL LIFE. We love to party and have fun.
5. Rich day! Payday!
Is it just me, or when it is payday everything is so magical? I am a testament to this. As a teacher getting your salary on time is a bid deal. I mean we work to get paid, let us not be shy here. We do not work for free. So getting paid, literary holding your hard earn cash on your hands makes you feel rich. There is no type of ecstasy payday, cannot give. So yeah! Blame me for being too honest, I love teaching, but I love earning more.
The world of teaching is a very interesting and fun-filled profession. It is not perfect, but it is not bad. Being a teacher should not limit us to things that make us real, Let us values honesty but with a mindful attitude and positive mindset.
